Print design refers to the process of creating visual materials that are intended for printing and physical distribution.

Print design is a fundamental tool used to convey information, promote brands and increase user engagement.

Introduction to print design

Print design is the creation of materials such as posters flyers, magazines, brochures, packaging, and other physical items. Print design involves the use of graphic design principles.

What is print design, and why is it important?

Key aspects of print design include layout, typography, colour, imagery, print specifications, resolutions and brand consistency. Print design is a valuable component of marketing, branding and communication strategies, providing a tactile way to engage with audiences.

The role of print design

The role of print design is dynamic and versatile. Visual physical items are key in conveying information, reinforcing a brand identity, attracting and persuading customers, and enhancing aesthetic appeal.

Benefits of print design

Holding and flipping through printed materials provides a tactile experience that the online experience so characteristic of our digital world cannot provide. Print materials are perceived to be more trustworthy and credible and are more accessible to a broader audience as they are not dependent on internet connectivity or electronic devices.

The 3 stages of print design

Stage 1: Set up

Once the Illustrator or Indesign final draft has been approved by the client and they give the go-ahead to print, we need to run through the Sign-off sheet which provides the final check to make sure everything is correct.

Stage 2: Considerations

Next, considerations such as the exact measurements of the document and the bleed that extends beyond the trim line of the printed piece are made.

Stage 3: PDF

Once the design has been created, a file is exported as a PDF with crop marks. All text is converted into vector drawings, and any linked images are embedded.
